The Extragalactic Lens Vlbi Imaging Survey (elvis). I. a Search for the Central Image in the Gravitational Lens Pmn J1838–3427

چکیده
The Extragalactic Lens VLBI Imaging Survey (ELVIS) searches for central images of lensed radio quasars, in order to measure the central density profiles of distant galaxies. Here we present sensitive multi-epoch Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) observations of PMN J1838–3427 at 8 GHz, with a 1 σ noise level of 38 μJy beam. Based on the absence of a central image of the background source at this level, we explore the possibilities for the central matter distribution in the lens galaxy. A power-law density profile, ρ ∝ r , must have γ > 1.93. Thus the density profile is close to an isothermal profile (γ = 2) or steeper. The upper limit on any constant-density core in an otherwise isothermal profile is . 5 parsecs. We also derive the constraints on models in which the density profile is isothermal on kiloparsec scales, but is allowed to have a different power law in the central ∼ 100 parsecs. If the lens galaxy harbors a supermassive black hole, the galaxy profile is allowed to be shallower, but for the expected black hole mass the galaxy profile must still be close to isothermal or steeper. PMN J1838–3427: A new gravitationally lensed quasar
We report the discovery of a new double-image quasar that was found during a search for gravitational lenses in the southern sky. Radio source PMN J1838–3427 is composed of two flat-spectrum components, separated by 1 in VLA and VLBA images, with matching spectral indices. An HST/WFPC2 image reveals the lens galaxy between the components. The background object is a z = 2.78 quasar, but the reds...
متن کاملAssessing the image quality and eye lens dose reduction using bismuth shielding in computed tomography of brain
Background: Epidemiological studies show that computed tomography (CT) is one of the main sources of ionizing radiations. Shielding of radiosensitive organs is one of the dose reduction methods. This study aimed to assess the eye lens dose reduction and image quality resulting from the use of radio-protective bismuth shield in brain CT imaging. Methods: Bismut...
متن کاملConstraints on Velocity Dispersion Function of Early-type Galaxies from the Statistics of Strong Gravitational Lensing
We use the distribution of gravitationally-lensed image separations observed in the Cosmic Lens All-Sky Survey (CLASS) and the PMN-NVSS Extragalactic Lens Survey (PANELS), which are (nearly) complete for the image separation range 0.3 ≤ ∆θ ≤ 6, to constrain a model velocity dispersion function (VF) of early-type galaxies. Assuming a current concordance cosmological model and adopting a singular...
متن کاملA search for the third lensed image in JVAS B 1030 + 074
Central gravitational image detection is very important for the study of the mass distribution of the inner parts (∼ 100 pc) of lens galaxies. However, the detection of such images is extremely rare and difficult. We present a 1.7-GHz High Sensitivity Array (HSA) observation of the double-image radio lens system B1030+074. The data are combined with archive VLBA and global-VLBI observations, an...
متن کاملInvestigation of the possible third image and mass models of the gravitational lens PMN J 1632 – 0033
We present multi-frequency VLBA observations of PMN J1632–0033, one of the few gravitationally lensed quasars suspected of having a central “odd” image. The central component has a different spectral index than the two bright quasar images. Therefore, either the central component is not a third image, and is instead the active nucleus of the lens galaxy, or else it is a third image whose spectr...
